BIJAEM — Visitor Information

JJ048 - Boardwalk at Memorial Site Welcome to the first phase of the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Memorial.

Built in 2006 on the site of the former Eagledale Ferry Landing on Taylor Road, the forested site includes wooden walkways, footbridges and gently meandering paths that are fully ADA compliant.

The gates mark the entry and exit of phase two and centerpiece of the memorial project, a 276 foot long "story wall" of granite and wood — one foot for each Japanese American who lived on Bainbridge Island at the start of World War II — where visitors will learn their American story and literally be walking in the "footsteps of history." Phase two is planned to be built in 2009.

Future phases include a 150 foot pier — one foot for each of the 150 people who returned to Bainbridge Island — rising at the end of the story wall at the same spot of the former Eagledale ferry dock, a 5,000 square–foot interpretive/research center and meeting room.

Tours:

Special arrangements can be made for a guided tour of the site for groups with interests and purposes that align with the BIJAC mission statement. We have a small number of volunteers who can conduct these tours so we ask that arrangements be made 3-4 weeks in advance. Please contact us at tours@bijac.org.
